Love Your Beardie

February is the month for love and Valentines. If you really love your Beardie, follow these simple steps for a happier, healthier dog.
- Groom often. Regular brushing doesn't just make your Beardie look nice; it also helps prevent skin disease and can strengthen the bond between you and your dog.
- Feed a high-quality food which is vital to your dog's health and well being.
- Keep the water fresh. Would you like to drink water that's been sitting in a bowl for days?
- Don't play doctor. Unless you're a veterinarian, don't try to treat your dog's ailments yourself. Medication meant for humans can have adverse effects on dogs.
- Update your phone list. When you post important numbers beside your phone, be sure to include your veterinarian's number, along with the after-hours number in case of an emergency and the name and number of someone who will care for your Beardie if you cannot.
- Walk, run, or play a game. Great for bonding and good exercise for both of you.
- Use common sense when engaging in outdoor activities during extreme weather conditions.
- Keep him slim. A slim, trim Beardie is a happy Beardie; so say no to extra calories and yes to exercise.
- Clip those nails. When nails get too long, it can affect your Beardie’s gait and even cause pain.
- Check those toys. Take a look at the toys your Bearie treasures. Are they safe and durable?
- Keep those ears clean to avoid ear problems due to common mites and infections. Remove excess hair and debris regularly.
- Consider a companion if you have an “only Beardie”. Beardies love other Beardies, and some will even share their home with a (gasp) kitty.
- Have proper ID. Determine the best identification option for your dog, whether it's a collar tag, a microchip or a tattoo.
- Don't dodge doctors. Even if your Beardie not a fan of going to the veterinarian, remember that regular checkups are vital to his health.
- Become a tooth fairy. Taking good care of your dog's teeth can prevent gum disease, tooth loss and bad breath; in addition to improving overall health.
- Beardies are thinkers. Be sure to provide your dog with some mental stimulation. Buy a new toy or teach a new trick.
- Read, research and educate yourself about current veterinary health trends and treatments.
- Help your Beardie to age gracefully. Adjust diet, exercise, medication and routines as needed.
- Get involved in a dog activity. Beardies love agility, herding, rally, obedience, tracking and therapy work.
- Be your Beardie’s best friend. Treat your dog right and you'll be showered with loyalty, love and friendship, not to mention all those happy, sloppy, wet beard kisses that make your day.
